Project Overview

The Pontiac School District’s WHRC Building has long been a center of innovation, home to three exceptional programs: the International Technology Academy, the International Language Academy, and the Special Education Academy. Over the past seven years, enrollment has steadily increased, reflecting the hard work and dedication of both educators and students. With a 100% graduation rate and a 96% college acceptance rate, the district continues to emphasize Project-Based Learning in environments that inspire, challenge, and support students as they reach their full potential.

One of the most significant improvements has been the creation of a new Science Lab, addressing a long-standing need for a dedicated space for hands-on learning and experimentation. Before this addition, the building lacked a proper science facility, limiting opportunities for advanced research. The solution involved combining two classrooms to create a state-of-the-art lab, featuring a prep area, five workstations for 30 students, a teacher instruction station, and a projection wall for interactive lessons.

The design of the new lab prioritized safety and accessibility. Key features include an emergency eye wash station, a gas shut-off system, and an additional exterior exit to ensure a secure learning environment. The lab also integrates cutting-edge virtual and augmented reality technology with ZSpace stations, allowing students to engage in immersive, multi-sensory experiences. These tools enable real-time collaboration and problem-solving, with students’ work shared with the entire class for a more interactive learning experience.

Beyond its functional use, the science lab symbolizes progress and opportunity. A fire-rated glass opening allows natural light to pour in and provides a view into the dynamic learning environment. For both students and teachers, the lab is more than just a classroom—it serves as a springboard for scientific discovery, innovation, and a brighter future for all involved.
