South Lyon East High

South Lyon Community Schools partnered with IDS for over six years, working through two bond issues before commissioning the team to plan, design, and construct their second high school. This long-standing relationship fostered a deep level of trust, collaboration, and teamwork throughout the entire process.

More than just a typical design and construction project, IDS played an integral role in site selection and development. The architects, engineers, and interior designers worked closely with a 25-person committee for over six months, helping to shift the school’s approach from a traditional departmental teaching model to a career-focused, collaborative learning environment.

The result is a stunning 318,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art facility situated on a 110-acre site.

Beyond the modern high school itself, the success of this project was built on relationships, many of which have grown into lifelong friendships.

As IDS’s first new high school design and largest construction project at the time, this endeavor held special significance for the team. Designed in 2003-04 and completed in September 2005, the project was filled with unique challenges and fascinating stories, from designing by committee and adapting to new teaching methodologies, to conducting an FAA radar study, navigating wetlands regulations, rerouting a gas line through the parking lot, and even leveling a hill on a busy roadway in front of the school.

Through innovative design, strategic problem-solving, and strong collaboration, South Lyon’s second high school stands as a testament to what’s possible when great teams work together toward a shared vision.
