Project Overview
The Hill Neighborhood is one of the University of Michigan’s three main residential communities, home to four historic residence halls that were in need of extensive renovation. IDS architects and engineers first engaged with the project in 2009 during the renovation of Stockwell Hall. The final two projects, Couzens and Alice Lloyd, were completed in August 2011 and July 2012, respectively. These upgrades modernized the buildings with air-conditioning, cutting-edge technology, and sustainability features, while also enhancing community spaces to foster stronger student connections.
Serving over 12,500 residents, the University’s Residential Program is one of the largest in the nation.
The Residence Life Initiatives project had two primary goals: to create a unified residential experience that fosters a sense of belonging and to improve infrastructure while enhancing student life.
The renovations transformed traditional residence halls into vibrant, state-of-the-art living spaces. Thoughtful design choices, including warm colors, inviting furnishings, and reimagined community bathrooms, helped create a more comfortable, home-like atmosphere. Alice Lloyd Hall, in particular, became a model for future UM housing, setting the standard for residence hall community spaces across campus.
