The impetus of this project was to realize the next step of the master plan for the MRI imaging suite on Level B2 of University Hospital, including space for two additional MRI scan rooms and support spaces.  Maintenance shops occupied the area planned for the new MRI scan rooms and were relocated to University Hospital South to make room for expanding suite.  Bid Pack 1 renovated Level 1 of University Hospital South to provide new Maintenance shops and offices for Environmental Services and Security.

Bid Pack 2 renovated Level B2 of University Hospital to provide a new MRI scan room and support spaces including, Men’s and Women’s Changing, MRI Prep, Anesthesia and shell space for future MRI equipment.  Finishes along the main corridor were upgraded on two sides of the MRI suite to enhance the patient experience traveling to the MRI suite and the Radiation Oncology suite beyond.  The MRI waiting area was placed on the corner of two intersecting corridors to provide ready visibility from the elevator lobby.

A unique challenge of this project was to install new helium quench and MRI exhaust ducts from Level B2, through the building, to the roof, for the day-one and future MRI’s.  Existing above ceiling infrastructure was surveyed and a path through Level B2 was identified, requiring minimal existing infrastructure relocation.  Space in an existing escalator shaft was utilized to extend the ducts to the second floor, where they offset and continued through an existing conference room.

Project Overview

  • Multi-phased renovation of University Hospital and University Hospital South, in support of expanding the MRI suite per the master plan.
  • Relocated Maintenance shops from Level B2 in University Hospital to Level 1 in University Hospital South.
  • Constructed new MRI scan room and support spaces in University Hospital including, Men’s and Women’s Changing, MRI Prep, Anesthesia and shell space for future MRI equipment.
