Valerie L. Grant, IIDA

Val’s drive and constant need for achievement comes from her belief of always leading with her strengths. She finds satisfaction in the feeling of completing a project, but there is always that internal fire pushing her to do more – just waiting for the next opportunity to rekindle the fire. She is a puzzle master extraordinaire when faced with complex situations involving many factors. She enjoys managing all variables from arranging to re-arranging until it feels right. She is always trying to figure out the best way to get things done. Being able to understand the pieces of the puzzle and the goal allows her to be flexible with the process from start to finish. From the early stages of programming through the final move-in, being completely submerged in the design keeps her compelled to nurture, refine and stretch the project towards excellence. Val understands that sometimes it’s important to be silent. She’s found you can learn a lot by listening. In this you can see the unvoiced question and anticipate the needs of the unspoken – all by sensing the emotions of those in the room. ASK, ENGAGE, LISTEN!

Michael G. DelPup, AIA

Construction and design has been a part of Mike’s life since he was in his teens, working “from the ground up” on his family’s commercial projects. There was never any doubt that he would pursue his architectural degree, adding his love of problem solving through creative, innovative design to his hands-on knowledge of quality construction. This combination of experiences makes Project Administration a natural fit for Mike. Along with knowledge of every facet of design, and his determination to provide clients with the best product possible, Mike’s quiet confidence makes his project teams successful. His work ethic is summed up by Chris Ruisi’s quote, “It doesn’t matter who else is watching; satisfy yourself first that you did your best”. Mike carries this over to his family life, helping his boys with their classic car and playing golf whenever possible.

Nicholas LaForest, AIA, NCARB

Nick’s curiosity for the built environment began at a young age. Raised in a historical farmhouse estate built in the 1850’s there was hardly a moment without a renovation project on the horizon. In short stride, following behind his father, he learned how to repair and build many things. What began as strictly observations soon transformed into hands-on learning of construction and the trades. Growing up learning the facets of construction taught him to appreciate all aspects of building and is why he prides himself on being part of a multi-disciplinary firm such as IDS.

He understands that every architectural project poses challenges and problems to be solved. His passion for architecture isn’t simply to solve a problem; rather, it is to deliver a project that balances innovation, value and efficiency while fulfilling the client’s needs and desires. His inspirations are rooted in the ideas of invention in architecture. He recognizes that buildings need to evolve with the ecological environment and not simply continue to be containers for activities. Not to be confused with passion, his gratification comes by delivering a complex project that creates energy of its own by interacting with the surrounding environment and having positive impact on the individuals that inhabit the space. Most of his career thus far has consisted of large-scale higher education projects that focus on student life. These types of projects include innovative programs that challenge the normative and, in turn, create some type of mixed-use environment. These particular projects are important to him; a successful completion means that it will have a positive influence on thousands of lives and perhaps leave a positive imprint of a time and place experienced.

Matthew R. Beck, Assoc. AIA, CDT

Matt’s love for architecture began in high school. His quest for perfection and hard work led him down a path of success. He went on to graduate from Lawrence Technological University with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture. Post graduation he worked for 3 other architecture firms before finding his home at IDS. Joining our team in 2004, Matt finally felt like he was part of a family and in a place where he could grow. Here at IDS he is able to work in a market segment that was dear to him, education. He loves kids and the idea of improving the educational system through the evolution of its environment. Matt has worked in the K-12 market for over 10 years and couldn’t be happier, acting as liaison between the client and the IDS team, he finds it rewarding to problem solve. When asked why he said, “I welcome a challenge or an unexpected issue; it helps you grow and gives you the opportunity to provide a solution, a different path and most times a better one.”

Matt’s family not only is an inspiration but also a reason to strive for the best. He has a beautiful wife and two daughters. His hard work ethic comes from making sure his family is happy and taken care of. In his free time Beck likes remote control models, fishing, jogging, traveling, rebuilding pinball machines and spending time with his family.

Shawn Tyburski, CTS, LEED® AP BD+C

He began his career at IDS as an electrical designer. This foundation afforded him the ability to plan technology projects from a unique background experience. Always looking to build upon or reuse an existing system, Shawn’s first thought is never “out with the old, in with the new.” This saves our customers significant amounts of money that could be better suited towards the purchase of additional technologies. That being said, managing and tracking budgets is a passion of his. Working with architects and engineers to provide collaborative documents results in successful implementation of projects, delivered on-time and on-budget. Following the teaching of one of his mentors, Dave Ramsey, he treats his customer’s money as if it were his own in an effort to get the most “bang for the buck.” This led him to want to pursue a degree in Business Administration, which he completed in 2018.

What he’s found is that the single most important thing he can do is to listen. Shawn believes that you must understand the entire situation before you can begin to impact the project in a successful way.

Shawn understands that in order to implement a successful project it takes a qualified team. He feels that every member of the team must be treated with an equal amount of respect. His wife, four children, peers, clients, and contractors know Shawn has an immeasurable amount of integrity. Spending time with his family is the reward he receives after a hard day’s work.

Shawn’s professional work includes an impressive list of electrical and technology projects in the K-12 and Higher Education markets.

Adrian La Tona, AIA, NCARB

Growing up, Adrian had one of the most amazing Lego collections around. He would spend days on end building intricate worlds and drawing on whatever he could get his hands on. Today he applies that same sense of curiosity and wonder to real world issues.

Graduating with his Master of Architecture from the University of Detroit Mercy in 2010, Adrian recalls his semester studying abroad in Italy as one of the highlights of his college experience. “Exploring new cities has always inspired me. There’s nothing like having the freedom of hopping on a train and arriving in a totally new place to discover.”

Since arriving at IDS, Adrian has been a part of a number of projects of varying scale. Working closely with Michigan State University coaches Izzo and Dantonio, he was a member of the team that delivered the Spartan Stadium North End Zone Addition, Duffy Daughtery Renovations and Berkowitz Office Refresh. He has also lent his talents to such University of Michigan projects as the Munger Graduate Residences, East Quad Renovation and the Taubman addition to the University of Michigan Art and Architecture building. He looks forward to growing as an architect as he continues to explore.

Kevin S. Marshall, AIA, LEED® AP BD+C

Kevin’s obsession lies in the details. Piecing together the puzzle of architecture is what gets his creative juices flowing. Whether it is creating the most functional and efficient plan or keeping the rain out, Kevin is always looking for ways to improve the status quo. When it comes to design, Kevin is a firm believer in – crossing the line’s. He feels that it is his responsibility to push his clients beyond what they want in order to truly understand what they need. As a lead technical architect, he works across not only the architectural department but also closely with other disciplines to develop a project. Kevin’s mantra is to – Turn the Corner’. To him, architecture is not only 3-dimensional, requiring study from all angles, but also adds the 4th dimension of time in order to be successful and sustainable. Throughout his career, Kevin has worked on a wide variety of projects but has mostly been involved in the Higher Education market. He loves the variety of project types associated with this market that make every day a new and exciting challenge. A true collaborator, Kevin has worked successfully with partners across the country and around the world leaving his ego at the door and learning from all interactions. Kevin feels a duty to help mentor the young professionals entering the practice and has been an active participant in the AIA Michigan Mentoring program for many years. Outside the office, Kevin is an avid archer sitting on the board of directors for the Detroit Archers and photographer of pretty much anything but people, but especially architecture and nature. He devotes much of his free time to his two children knowing all too well that it won’t be too long before they leave the nest.

Brandon Sundberg, AIA, LEED® AP

Growing up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Brandon’s love of architecture and observation began at the early age of seven. He drew from the natural environment of his surroundings as his mother helped him realize a sense of place and the importance its affects have on people and memory. Being mindful of the environment and cultivating meaningful relationships has been and continues to be a life goal. Brandon cherishes the happiness witnessed when people first occupy the spaces his teams create. Brandon strives to bridge people with the practice of architecture and engineering, IDS allows for this endeavor on a daily basis. As Senior Vice President, Director of Architecture, he is drawn by the importance of the process of architecture and the orchestration of the various roles people play within the process. Brandon has taken on many roles in the last 25 years, from the early years of working in his uncles A/E firm, side by side with his grandfather in the print room, to the more current roles including surveyor, designer, lead technical architect, manager and assistant director. Brandon enjoys spending time with family, his wife and two boys. He has a tremendous love for music and sports. Joseph L. Schwartz, PE, CGD, LEED® AP BD+C

From a young age, Joe has been fascinated with buildings, construction and solving problems. As Vice President, Director of Mechanical Engineering at IDS, Joe is able to engage in these three passions all at once. Joe’s goal with every project is to provide energy efficient mechanical systems that seamlessly blend into the building architecture. Taking the name of Integrated Design Solutions to heart, Joe works diligently with the architects and other project disciplines to provide coordinated mechanical designs that work WITH the building design without sacrificing system performance. The ultimate goal is to provide a comfortable environment for all building occupants. Joe feels that if he does his job right, people won’t even realize that he did his job at all. Outside the office, Joe enjoys solving the problems presented by everyday life with his wife and two children.

Jeff knew he wanted to pursue Architecture because of his fascination with the process of bringing an idea to life. Jeff’s love for the process of Architecture sets him apart. He admires and appreciates the very beginning of a project just as much as seeing the ribbon being cut at the opening ceremony. As a project manager, Jeff understands the importance of communication and possesses the patience to handle multiple aspects of a project from start to completion. Upon graduation he applied at IDS, and 30 years, a beautiful wife and two children later he couldn’t be happier. Outside of IDS, Jeff has a tremendous love for coaching his son’s baseball team and watching his children grow.
